Es Baluard Museu d'Art Contemporani de Palma

Es Baluard Museum of Contemporary Art of Palma was inaugurated in January 2004. The museum is a cultural space for the research and diffusion of Balearic and Mediterranean art from the 20th and 21st centuries, the central axis of which is the permanent collection and the programme of temporary exhibitions.
The Baluard de Sant Pere (Bastion of Saint Peter) has been destined to serve as the location of the museum. This former military fortress dates back to the 16th century and is categorised as a Heritage and Cultural Interest Asset (B.I.C. Bien de Interés Cultural).
The building was designed by the architects Luis and Jaime García-Ruiz, Ángel Sánchez-Cantalejo and Vicente Tomás, and offers an impressive panoramic view of the whole of the Bay of Palma.
The architectural project, extremely respectful of the monumental surroundings, covers a total surface of 5,027 square metres with 2,500 sq. m. of exhibition space, and symbolises its Mediterranean-ness by including the external spaces as part of the museum enclosure and establishing a constant relationship between interior and exterior. It was designed as a link between people and art, and between the city and the sea.
The Museum will have large exhibition rooms, open spaces above the city, terraces, conference rooms and one of the largest cisterns from the 17th century in Mallorca that it has now been renovated.
Es Baluard also has a shop/bookshop and restaurant/cafeteria.
Paintings, sculptures, ceramics and drawings by artists related to the most important international artistic periods, from the end of the XIXth century until the present.
